There's often debate around tattoo prices — and we get it, everyone wants to feel like they got a good deal (if you're looking for a promo code, there isn't one). But understanding how prices are calculated can give you peace of mind that you're getting your money's worth.
In this article, we'll explain exactly how we set our rates at Studio Pixel and why "cheaper" doesn't always mean "better value."
Alright, let's go!
How Are Tattoo Prices Calculated?
Most tattoo shops charge by the hour, but since every artist works at their own pace, it might take some 6 hours to complete a tattoo that others finish in 9 hours.
Should you pay more for the same quality?
We don't think so!
Some areas can also be more painful (we see you there, wanting those rib tattoos). And sometimes the position is awkward for both the artist and you. We've seen clients get impatient when the artist takes their time — don't panic, nobody's trying to overcharge you.
Why We Charge Per Piece at Studio Pixel
At Studio Pixel, instead of an hourly rate, we charge per piece. You pay for the final result, not for the time it takes to create it. We think that's fairer: it takes the pressure off rushing, and the artist can truly give their best.
By paying for the final result rather than hours of chair time, we can work with your budget while staying focused on quality, not the clock.
Feel free to mention if you have a specific budget — we'll propose something that fits!
Factors That Influence Tattoo Pricing
So what can affect the price? Lots of things, including…
-
Size: The number one factor — the bigger, the more expensive.
-
Style: Some styles are more complex than others. Fine line tattoos, for example, are often seen as "simple," but they're actually quite tricky for an artist.
-
Color: Black and grey or color changes everything. Color work requires real expertise — mixing and shading aren't something you improvise.
-
Placement: Some body parts are harder to tattoo. Tight skin areas and angled spots can literally make the artist sweat: ribs, neck, stomach, knees, elbows are generally a bit pricier.
-
Skin type: Yep, even skin texture can change things. It's one of those small details that can make two seemingly identical tattoos end up with different prices.
-
Detail/complexity: The more detailed the design, the longer it takes. It's like drawing with too many colored pencils — you know it's going to take all evening.
How Do Free Consultations Work?
If it's your first tattoo, we strongly recommend stopping by to discuss your project with one of our artists. We'll go over the design, size, placement together, and give you our best advice (and you'll even get a coffee — it's part of the service).
These consultations are free, so no excuse not to come say hi!
How Do Deposits Work?
A non-refundable €50 deposit is required to book a date with one of our artists. This lets them start working on your custom design and prepare everything needed for your appointment. Generally, the deposit represents about 25% of the total price, but this can vary depending on the project and the artist.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
For small tattoos (roughly A4 size or smaller), a single session is enough. But if you're planning a full sleeve or a larger project, expect multiple sessions.
When a tattoo requires several sessions, we estimate a price per session.
When Do I Get a Quote?
As soon as we have all the details, we can give you an estimate.
We'll need to know:
-
The style (gather inspiration photos — even if your tattoo will outshine them)
-
The size in centimeters
-
The placement
-
Black and grey or color
We can give you a quote online by email in response to our form.
Is There a Minimum Spend?
At Studio Pixel, there's a €100 minimum for tattoos. This covers all the basics to ensure a tattoo in the best conditions, regardless of size or detail level.
People don't always realize everything that's needed before, during, and after the tattoo: setting up the station, preparing inks, needles, gloves, towels, and of course cleaning everything afterward.
What Are My Payment Options?
We're flexible on when you want to pay. Before, after seeing the stencil on your skin, or after getting the tattoo — whatever works for you!
Financing Options Available
We also offer 4-installment payment plans through Alma and PayPal, which means you can get tattooed now even if you need to wait for your next paycheck.
You Get What You Pay For
At Studio Pixel, we're here to do quality tattoos.
You'll always find cheaper prices elsewhere, and if you're willing to compromise on quality, go ahead and explore. But if you want a piece of art that will last a lifetime, it's worth investing from the start and choosing the best artists with the best equipment in an impeccable environment.
Otherwise, we might see you back here for laser or a cover-up (and this time, you can't say we didn't warn you!).
Remember, you'll be looking at this tattoo every day for decades. It might as well be a masterpiece!
